Did You Know That Even Dinosaurs Had Arthritis Problems?
Even dinosaurs weren’t spared from arthritis! For instance, around 70 million years ago, a hadrosaur (duck-billed dinosaur) living near the Navesink Formation (what is now New Jersey) developed septic arthritis. It is a painful bone condition caused by an injury that led to infection. Interestingly, in 2016, paleontologist Jennifer Anné and her team at the University of Manchester diagnosed the condition. They used non-invasive x-ray microtomography to analyze the fossilized arm bones. Through their findings, they revealed porous and eroded textures alongside abnormal bone growth. This points to septic arthritis as the most likely diagnosis.
Moreover, this discovery offers a rare glimpse into the daily struggles of dinosaurs. This proves that life in the prehistoric wild was far from easy. Despite the challenges, the dinosaur likely survived the infection for some time. However, its condition highlights the harsh realities of its environment. Paleopathology continues to unveil fascinating details about dinosaur health, showing us that even the mightiest creatures had their vulnerabilities.
